“Good art is like good law, or so I would like to think. Both endeavors require insight and passion in order to succeed, and both Bencab and I have contributed to our respective fields over the course of our career. My wife and I were fortunate to meet Bencab when we were both living in London in the eighties. Ben was a struggling artist and I was just starting my career in law. We have maintained our friendship until now. Bencab is one of the hottest selling visual artists in the Philippines today, but what people do not realize is that success did not come instantly. My wife and I saw how he kept at it and continuously worked on his art. Bencab recently celebrated his 50 years as an artist with a retrospective show at the Metropolitan Museum in Manila, which opened with a Gala Dinner on the 3rd of October 2015. My wife and I attended the event, and as the curator said: that with the varied body of work on show, people will realize that he is actually better that most people thought. The Metropolitan Museum was able to borrow examples of his works from the 60’s to the present, and they will be on display until the end of February 2016. Bencab has his own museum in the Philippines summer capital, Baguio City, and you can view it at bencabmuseum.org. I have a picture from the Gala dinner and Bencab is the gentleman with a beard, and I am the person on the left, and the other persons are friends.”
